Our verdict
It cleaned the whole house and the car on one charge with 44% on the screen. We emptied it once. After six weeks of dog hair the brush roll was still clean. It stands up on its own when you let go. The battery clicks out, so you can replace it. The Dyson's needs a screwdriver. The warranty runs five years.
Clean number nine settled it. Saturday morning. The dog had been on the upstairs carpet all week. The kitchen had crumbs under the high chair. The car had lake sand on the floor mats. We started at the front door on Eco with the brush head on. Entry, living room, dining room, kitchen. Up the stairs one step at a time as a handheld. Hallway, three bedrooms, bathroom. Then out to the driveway with the crevice tool. Twenty-nine minutes. The screen said 44%. We had not emptied it once. When we did, one solid gray lump of hair and grit dropped into the trash. The brush roll underneath was clean.
No other vacuum in the test did all of that in one go. The Levoit did the house but had 11% left and nothing for the car. The Shark did the house on 12% and could not do the car either. The Dyson, the Tineco, the Bissell and the Eureka did not finish the house. The $140 Amazon stick finished the house, then wrapped its brush roll by Thursday.
Ray Kowalski has repaired vacuums in Dayton for 23 years. He took every vacuum in this test apart with us. "Nobody brings me a cordless because it stopped sucking. They bring it in because the battery died, the brush roll got choked with hair, or the dust bin drove them nuts. This one fixes the bin and the brush roll, and the battery is covered."
The Airvac V18 answers the complaints that send most cordless sticks back to the closet. Runtime: up to 60 minutes on Eco, about 35 on Standard and about 25 on Max, with the mode and battery level on an LED display, so you know where you stand before the stairs. Bin: 1.2 liters, more than double the Dyson V8’s, emptied with one press from the bottom. Hair: a motorized anti-tangle brush designed to guide long hair and pet hair into the bin instead of winding it round the roller. Storage: it stands on its own when you pause and charges on a wall dock. Support: five years of warranty, and 60 days to send it back for a refund.

What we liked
- The battery clicks out. Press the catch, lift the pack off, put it back. The Dyson battery in this test needs a screwdriver
- The brush roll has comb teeth built in. Nothing wrapped around it after six weeks of retriever hair and three people with long hair. No scissors needed
- 1.2-liter bin. One empty per clean, at the end, straight into the trash
- A button, not a trigger. Press it once and vacuum. Nothing to hold down for 29 minutes
- The round screen on the top shows the battery as a percentage, so you know before you start the stairs whether you will finish
- Stands up on its own wherever you stop. The wall dock charges it and holds both tools
- Five green lights on the front of the head show up dust you thought was not there. The wand adjusts, so it suits tall and short people
- Rice came out of the stair carpet in one pass. Nobody in our group mentioned suction after day one
- A brush tool for the couch, a long crevice tool and a spare washable HEPA filter, all in the box
- 60 days to send it back for a full refund, no restocking fee. The 5-year warranty covers the battery, and the maker sells spare batteries and filters
What we did not like
- Not the lightest here. The Eureka is noticeably lighter, and you feel it when doing the ceiling fans
- No app or dust sensor. It has lights on the head, a screen and buttons, nothing more
- The maker says up to 60 minutes on one charge. Like every "up to" figure, you will not get that on carpet. It still finished our house with 44% left
- Max mode is loud. It is for one stubborn spot, not the whole house
- Deep shag carpet stalls the head. It stalled every cordless head in this test

Best for: A house with a mix of hard floors and carpet, stairs, and a pet or someone with long hair. Especially if the corded upright in the closet has quietly become the only vacuum anyone uses.
Who should not buy it: Homes that are mostly very high-pile carpet, anyone who needs to pick up liquids, or anyone who wants app control or a robot that cleans while they are out.
